Itamar Kubovy is the executive director of Pilobolus, a modern performance company. Kyle Gilpin works in MIT’s Distributed Robotics Laboratory. At PopTech 2012, they and hundreds of volunteers collaborated on a performance using umbrellas fabricated with multi-colored lights, a camera fixed on a crane, and a large screen. Kubovy said that, “Fundamentally, what we were looking for is the feeling of ownership without authorship.”

Through her work, she is able to design haptic interfaces, virtual objects and distant environments that feel real to the human touch. Her work aids in everything from creating more immersive environments for surgeons to designing tablet computers with surfaces that simulate reality.
