Wall Street’s financial crisis continues to snowball, sending shockwaves through the U.S. and global economic markets. A hotly contested U.S. presidential election continues ratcheting up in tension. A recession deepens. It’s sometimes difficult to forecast interesting trends in times such as these. But sometimes conceptualizing a better future is the perfect antidote to the hysteria surrounding current events.

This is exactly why stories of people like Will Allen, who was recently awarded a Macarthur “genius” grant for his innovative urban farming initiative in Milwaukee, are so inspiring. With just a few acres of land, Allen’s Growing Power organization is running six greenhouses, a high-tech composting operation, and much more–yielding a harvest of about half a million dollars’ worth of produce and fish in a community lacking a sustainable local food supply. With his Macarthur grant, Allen hopes to get his entire farming operation off the grid and onto renewable energy sources.
