DNA Quilts: Dreaming of Gene-y

You may not be able to make a quilt, but your DNA can. Artist Beverly St. Clair developed a way to translate genetic information into a visual pattern language that she then uses for quilt designs. A psychiatrist and a long-time quilter, St. Clair was inspired to create her “genome quilts” after attending a lecture about the Human Genome Project.

St.Clair can actually customize a quilt based on a “favorite gene” or a section of your own DNA. She directs interested buyers to the National Geographic site, which explains how you can sequence your own DNA as part of the fascinating Genographic Project.

Perhaps there’s a scientist on your holiday gift list who would appreciate one of these handcrafted, truly unique quilts. With the chilly days of winter just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to wrap yourself up in the warm embrace of you.
