Newspapers around the world are reporting on a new music format that will soon be introduced on a massive scale, to be called the “slotMusic” card. The cards are designed to fit into the MicroSD slots on millions of cell phones and other mobile devices. The music industry hopes that these wafer-thin cards, smaller than your average stamp, will be a lifeline to ailing record labels struggling with the mp3 era by giving them, once more, a tangible product to sell. Each slotMusic card will be loaded with one album’s worth of music, encoded in mp3 format; the cards are expected to retail in the ballpark of $10 apiece — about the cost of a CD. The question of whether or not this format will catch on is debatable, to put it lightly. At the very least, the music encoded on these cards is promised to be DRM-free.

As Guy Kawasaki said to Steve Ballmer, who uses DVDs anymore? (in defense of the MacBook Air which has non DVD drive). Who uses CDs or any physical devices for music any more? And in this case, who is going to fiddle with juggling these little, losable, microcards? This is such a “yesterday” approach.
